Navigation (aka “Hell in a Cell”)
Hello, sorry it’s been a bit of time between updates. It’s been a bit of a piecemeal kind of time, with a lot of small and boring changes as well as a big rewrite. I’m now back onto the match booking system at last! 🙂
The huge change nobody will notice
The pathfinding… the cell system… I lovingly created and worked on my own custom A* pathfinding system, with a really nice performance etc, however, I could feel it creaking when I got nearer to it, and the agents still walked through each other with no clear way to get around it. I have since invested in Agents Navigation, and not looked back. It’s involved a lot of deletion and refactoring, but the results are so much better than anything I could have come up with, the game will be better as a result, and I can actually get on with the gameplay.
Booking
The game revolves around booking, and right now… you can edit a match participant! I stress the singular phrasing here, it breaks afterwards! But it’s progress, and I am very happy to be reusing code, and making this system work in a structured way.
I will likely spend a bit of time designing how the interactions and UI should behave – I wished I’d done this earlier with the CWL incarnation, so I’m hoping this will pay off. I’m by no means an interface designer, so this could be interesting…
Random side note
I’m signed up for a game jam through April! It’s Games for Blind Gamers 2, and I’m really looking forward to revisiting my musical audio past! 🙂 Hopefully I’ll be able to share more about this over the coming weeks, it should be a lot of fun, and might inform how I can help users play Ringside Booker with better accessibility.
